SUPPORTING PRECISION PISTOL SHOOTING
The South West Regional Pistol Squad aims to provide an individual athlete specific support program for elite pistol shooters in the South West of England*
Bringing together a team from various areas such as Sports Nutrition, Strength & Conditioning, Sports Psychology, and employing the "marginal incremental gains" philosophy so effective in other sports to look at each athlete and how to help them reach their potential.
The athletes on the program are not only experienced and accomplished pistol shooters but vitally share a common belief that to rise to the next level will require more than just "throwing more lead down range".
A unique setup in UK pistol shooting aside from some specialist university programs, our athlete support team are drawn from a range of fields, from Sports Psychology to Nutrition, from Strength & conditioning to Polysomnography, also called a sleep study, and obviously technical shooting coaches who have coached and competed at the highest levels.
For athletes looking to join the South West Regional Pistol Squad a firm belief in the benefits for small incremental improvements and an open mind are vital.
IMPROVING PERFORMANCE 1 POINT AT A TIME
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
The Aims and Benefits of Good Technique
Using good technique in any sport is beneficial because it promotes high performance and reduces the risk of injury. Athletes need to develop the skills necessary to perform the movements of their sport correctly. If shooters learn and use incorrect techniques they may at first perform well but they are placing themselves at increased risk of both acute and chronic injury that will reduce their ability to perform.
The importance of being YOU.
While understanding and striving for great technique the South West Regional Pistol Squad recognises that we are all different both Physically, mentally and emotionally and those differences should be embraced and celebrated and a technique and process developed that works with the athlete rather than adopting a one size fits all approach. A quick look along the firing line at any range or competition, even at the highest levels, show that no two athletes are exactly the same. While we drill the basics of Grip, Posture, Balance, Alignment, Breathing & Sight Picture, we realise the importance of your Shot Process being individual to you.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
The role of a strength and conditioning is to use exercise prescription specifically to improve performance in athletic competition. They also help athletes with injury prevention and proper mechanics within their sports performances
Strength and Conditioning is about more than lifting weights – it encompasses the entire development of the athlete and what is needed to improve physical performance. This includes plyometrics, speed and agility, endurance and core stability with strength training being just one piece of the jigsaw.
A sports and fitness nutritionist is responsible for teaching athletes and fitness enthusiasts effective ways to improve their health, optimize their performance and manage their weight. Nutritionists may advise individuals on dietary practices; exercise; and use of vitamins, minerals and supplements.
Why is nutrition important in sports performance?
At the most basic level, nutrition is important for athletes because it provides a source of energy required to perform the activity. The food we eat impacts on our strength, training, performance, mental focus and recovery.
Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from many related fields including biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors.
If you Google the word Teamwork it is defined as "the collaborative effort of a team to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in the most effective and efficient way. This concept is seen within the greater framework of a team, which is a group of interdependent individuals who work together towards a common goal."
"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it."
“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life forever.”
THE X FACTOR
Athlete development is a long-term process. Although many gadgets, instruments, and training aids are sold as the ultimate “must-have” item, unfortunately there are no shortcuts or magic pills that allow an individual to reach their ultimate potential without time, energy, and introspection. It should be understood that the only way for an athlete to get where they want to be is through preparation, experience, and continuous learning through evaluation.
